What are these people doing? Waiting for a bus? Waiting for Godot?
Counting the bricks in the historic streets???

NO! These people gathered on October 13, 2007 to mark the Centennial of the town
of Electra, Texas and to kickoff the Grand Theatre Internet Campaign for your help
in preserving this marvelous structure---one of very few historic theatres left
in the Southwest. On this day the Grand was awarded the "Texas Historical Marker"
plaque from the Texas Historical Commission.

You can join us in this mission - please keep visiting www.electragrandtheatre.com for more on the history of the theatre, progress to date and plans for the future.

Help us SAVE THE GRAND!

Picture a little windblown boomtown on the prairie in Texas when this striking structure was christened as the "Grand Theatre" in 1921. Electra, Texas was fourteen years old and thriving with over 15,000 folks seeking to find a home, build a community and enjoy life.

One of five theatres /opera houses / vaudeville houses in town, the Grand enjoyed a brisk business--especially on Saturday nights when paychecks were redeemed and money flowed.

Today, the Grand stands alone as the theatre beacon of those boomtown days. Few films, stage shows or traveling acts have been on the boards for years. Now the Grand is undergoing a renaissance with the help of generations past and present.....and interested parties who believe in preserving this special type of heritage.

Vintage theatres have a special place in our history and we are determined to bring this one back to life to play a central role in our historic downtown. Over the past several years the roof and facade of the building have been stablilized to maintain the integrity of the building. However, as you will see from the photos on the "Past" page, the interior is in very bad condition due to years of leakage and deterioration. Our challenge is to complete exterior structural needs and to completely renovate the interior.

The photograph above was taken on October 13, 2007 to mark the Centennial of Electra, Texas. The crowd-- composed of residents, visitors, old and young--gathered in front of "The Grand" to kickoff the next stage of the complete restoration of the theatre. "The Grandstanders" , as they are called, are there to show their support and to ask you for yours as they work to make The Grand a community treasure once again.

Visit the pages of the site and get a flavor of the history of this marvelous structure and the plans for its future. You, too, can play an important part in saving The Grand and in restoring this treasure. The Electra Grand Theatre, Inc. is a non-profit organization and contributions are tax exempt to the extent allowed by law.
