Remember the good old days when you went to the movies on Saturday afternoons? Your parents probably went shopping or to do errands and parked you in the cheapest babysitter known at the time--the movie house. The Grand Theatre in Electra, Texas provided many a kid with the most thrilling entertainment available in those days. Remember stars like Tom Mix? Gene Autry? Roy Rogers? Dale Evans? Red
Ryder? Remember 5 cent candy bars? Popcorn? Soda pop? Remember nickle admission tickets? Remember the owner or manager reminding you --not so gently--to keep you feet off the seat in front of you? To keep your bubble gum in your mouth and not on the chairs, floor or the hair of the little girl in front of you? Our Grand Theatre was a center of activity during the oil boom years. But as the oil industry began to shift, so did the economy of the area. Farming and ranching were the primary income producers. They were not as lucrative so as incomes slipped so did the sustainability of the Grand and the other theatres in town. Vintage theatres have a special place in our history and we are determined to bring this one back to life to play a central role in our historic downtown. Over the past several years the roof and facade of the building have been stablilized to maintain the integrity of the building. However, as you will see from the photos on the gallery page, the interior is in very bad condition due to years of leakage and deterioration. Our challenge is to complete exterior structural needs and to completely renovate the interior. With this snapshot of the Grand's past, it is time to look to the future!
